Update from our Principal

Hawthorne Principal’s Blog

Please remember to send your child to school with a warm jacket or sweatshirt. It is cold and wet outside and students are not sent out for recess unless they are dressed appropriately for the weather. Our Lost and Found is full of unclaimed jackets and sweatshirts so please encourage your child to visit it if any clothing has not returned from school recently.

Our next PTC meeting is Thursday, February the 9th at 5:30. If you are interested in joining Hawthorne’s PTC please contact Mr. Beck at 541-367-7167 for more details.

All visitors to Hawthorne are required to check in at the office and to wear a “Visitors” badge. If you are not wearing a “Visitors” badge you should be directed to the office to check in by a staff member. We do this to ensure the safety of all students and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this matter. If you have any questions about Hawthorne’s visitor policy please contact me.

Consistent attendance is vital to academic success at school, especially at the elementary level. If your child is sick (don’t forget to call in and let us know that your child will be absent) please keep them home until they are no longer contagious but otherwise please make sure your child is at school before 7:40 each morning. Tardies have a profoundly negative impact on academic progress. We start our Reading block each morning soon after the bell rings to signify the beginning of school and when students are late they miss out on valuable instruction.

At Hawthorne we call home on each child absence and I personally contact the families of students with poor attendance (both absences and tardies). The Sweet Home School District also has a truancy officer that will get involved if a student has chronic attendance issues. If you have any questions about the district policy on student attendance, please contact me at 541-367-7167.

If you would like to be informed of school closures due to inclement weather or school start-time delays please sign up for flashalert.net. You can find the link on how to register your e-mail address and/or phone number via the Sweet Home School District web page. The link to Flashalert.net is located on the bottom left corner of the district’s web page. If you have any questions about flashalert.net please let me know.

Hawthorne’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) program celebrates and rewards expected behavior by students. Hawthorne’s PBIS team holds a monthly event for students who have not received a “Minor” or a referral. For October’s PBIS “Halloween Party” 98% of all Hawthorne students were eligible to participate because they were safe, respectful, and responsible all month.

During the month of November 96% of all Hawthorne students were eligible to participate in the PBIS “Civil War Canned Food Drive.” To put this school-wide participation percentage in perspective, the PBIS model states that a school has an effective behavioral program in place when 80% of all students receive no referrals or “Minors” each month. Those few Hawthorne students who have had a behavioral issue will spend time in our Library during each month’s PBIS event.

In January students who have not received a “Minor” or a referral will participate in our annual PBIS “Bingo” event on Friday the 27th. This PBIS event is a way to show our appreciation for students being safe, respectful, and responsible every day.

Mr. A, our spectacular counselor, and Mr. Beck meet individually with students who do not participate in a monthly PBIS event and help formulate a plan so the student can be successful the following month and attend the next PBIS event. If you have questions about our PBIS program or would like to volunteer at our PBIS events please contact Mr. Beck at 541-367-7167.
