Friday Folder News
Hello Families,
Our letter for the week was N. When you say N your tongue is
behind your top teeth and a little air comes out your nose.
Our new word this week was here. Please practice the sight
words at home. See if your child can make the sight word out of his or her
cheerio snack or try another fun idea.
MATH
HOMEWORK – math homework now has two sides!!! We have been learning to count by
tens. The backside of the math homework will reinforce this skill at home.
Please
work with your child every day with their letter names and sounds. Some
students are still struggling with these. The reinforcement at home is
important.
There
are a few students who are not returning homework. Please make sure your child
does their homework, names and numbers!
WOW!! So much has been going on in Kindergarten. Please read
the website to stay up to date.
Thanks
-Miss Thompson

it back to school so Miss Thompson can see it.
Be sure to check out the Kindergarten website for photos and

Update from our Principal
Hawthorne Principal’s Blog
Please remember to send your child to school with a warm jacket or sweatshirt. It is cold and wet outside and students are not sent out for recess unless they are dressed appropriately for the weather. Our Lost and Found is full of unclaimed jackets and sweatshirts so please encourage your child to visit it if any clothing has not returned from school recently.
Our next PTC meeting is Thursday, February the 9th at 5:30. If you are interested in joining Hawthorne’s PTC please contact Mr. Beck at 541-367-7167 for more details.
All visitors to Hawthorne are required to check in at the office and to wear a “Visitors” badge. If you are not wearing a “Visitors” badge you should be directed to the office to check in by a staff member. We do this to ensure the safety of all students and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this matter. If you have any questions about Hawthorne’s visitor policy please contact me.
Consistent attendance is vital to academic success at school, especially at the elementary level. If your child is sick (don’t forget to call in and let us know that your child will be absent) please keep them home until they are no longer contagious but otherwise please make sure your child is at school before 7:40 each morning. Tardies have a profoundly negative impact on academic progress. We start our Reading block each morning soon after the bell rings to signify the beginning of school and when students are late they miss out on valuable instruction.
At Hawthorne we call home on each child absence and I personally contact the families of students with poor attendance (both absences and tardies). The Sweet Home School District also has a truancy officer that will get involved if a student has chronic attendance issues. If you have any questions about the district policy on student attendance, please contact me at 541-367-7167.
If you would like to be informed of school closures due to inclement weather or school start-time delays please sign up for flashalert.net. You can find the link on how to register your e-mail address and/or phone number via the Sweet Home School District web page. The link to Flashalert.net is located on the bottom left corner of the district’s web page. If you have any questions about flashalert.net please let me know.
Hawthorne’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) program celebrates and rewards expected behavior by students. Hawthorne’s PBIS team holds a monthly event for students who have not received a “Minor” or a referral. For October’s PBIS “Halloween Party” 98% of all Hawthorne students were eligible to participate because they were safe, respectful, and responsible all month.
During the month of November 96% of all Hawthorne students were eligible to participate in the PBIS “Civil War Canned Food Drive.” To put this school-wide participation percentage in perspective, the PBIS model states that a school has an effective behavioral program in place when 80% of all students receive no referrals or “Minors” each month. Those few Hawthorne students who have had a behavioral issue will spend time in our Library during each month’s PBIS event.
In January students who have not received a “Minor” or a referral will participate in our annual PBIS “Bingo” event on Friday the 27th. This PBIS event is a way to show our appreciation for students being safe, respectful, and responsible every day.
Mr. A, our spectacular counselor, and Mr. Beck meet individually with students who do not participate in a monthly PBIS event and help formulate a plan so the student can be successful the following month and attend the next PBIS event. If you have questions about our PBIS program or would like to volunteer at our PBIS events please contact Mr. Beck at 541-367-7167.

Friday Folder News
Hello Families,
Our letter for the week was I. When you say I your mouth is
open and your tongue is slightly lowered. It is a tricky sound because most of
the time it comes in the middle of a word. Pig, dig, king…
We
have been working a lot on voice control in Kindergarten. It has been very loud
in Kindergarten. Some students yell when they get excited. This week Mrs.
Hummer and I have both said “Why are you yelling?” many times. Please reinforce
this at home.
Please
work with your child every day with their letter names and sounds. Some
students are still struggling with these. The reinforcement at home is
important.
There
are a few students who are not returning homework. Please make sure your child
does their homework, names and numbers!
This
rain has forced us inside many days this week for recess. We go to the gym when
we can. We have been watching a few short movies. These movies are book that
have been animated.
Thanks
-Miss Thompson
Only ten students have returned their fundraising packets.
If you are a family who has not returned it yet please send it back by TUESDAY at the latest!!!
NO SCHOOL MONDAY
Please make sure your child has a warm coat. We will still
be going to recess in the cold!
I know with the change for Friday that means the morning
families will not get Friday Folders. I want everyone to be safe!!! Friday
Folders will be sent home on Monday. I know it’s a little different but let’s
all be safe.
If you want to pick your child’s Friday folder up in the
office please call in the morning and let us know. If school is totally
canceled tomorrow that will not be an option.

Snow
Both classes were great today. Neither class went outside for recess. It was super cold and wet snow. I was afraid of the miserable wet kids I would have when we came back inside.

Fundraiser!!!! (will be in Friday Folders)
Dear
Parents,
Our
school has a fantastic opportunity to get free money, please help us take
advantage of this. It is super easy! I will help you with each step. Just keep
reading.
1. Find the white envelope in
Friday Folders, it says “Parents…Please Help Us!” on the front. (SEE PHOTO BELOW)
2. Open this envelope, you will
find a booklet inside. On the front cover please write your child’s name and
school. If you would like to be entered into the Florida Family Vacation check
YES, if not, check NO. (SEE PHOTO BELOW)
3. The inside front cover shows
an example of a filled out sheet. Read over it
4. Fill out each sheet. Just
fill out the FRONT side. Do NOT fill out the backside, the backside is the
order form for later, do NOT fill it out. (SEE PHOTO BELOW)
5. When you fill out the front
side please keep these people in mind
a. Grandparents
b. Aunts and Uncles
c. Babysitters
d. Neighbors
e. Friends from Church
f. Friends from Sports
6. You can not use other
Hawthorne Students!! Do NOT put the
address of other Hawthorne Students.
7. Return the booklet to
school. Prizes will be given out for returning them and extra prizes if the
book is complete.
8. Please return the books even
if not completed by January 20, 2012
Money
raised from this project will go directly to Hawthorne. It will help us
purchase new tables for our computers in the library. These tables are needed
badly, please help us.
What
happens after I give you the addresses? … We mail them off to the company and
the company then sends each individual person a catalog to order magazines.
Pretty simple!
If you have any questions please call me at 541-367-7168 or
email me Julie.Thompson@sweethome.k12.or.us
